According to Hermiston Police Chief Jason Edmiston, police officers were called around 8 p.m. to respond to a report of a woman causing a disturbance at the 300 block of E. Cherry Avenue. When officers arrived, they found Janie Appleby, 47, 320 E. Cherry Ave., No. B. Officers then found she had an active arrest warrant and attempted to take her into custody.

Edmiston said Appleby refused all verbal commands and began resisting officers by kicking and swinging at them.

At one point, according to the police chief, Appleby struck an officer in the face, breaking his glasses and causing his nose to bleed. The officer was also kicked in the chest.

Appleby was lodged in the Umatilla County Jail on charges of assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and second-degree criminal mischief.

“No call for service is ever predictable and officers are trained to be alert and ready to take immediate action,” Edmiston said. “This incident involves yet another person having a mental crisis of some kind and officers having to respond and be the community caretaker. Fortunately, our officer only received minor injuries but taxpayers will be footing the bill to replace the glasses Ms. Appleby broke.”
