On Monday, the Hermiston School Board accepted the resignation of Dr. Fred Maiocco as superintendent.
Maiocco serves as a brigadier (one star) general in the U.S. Army Reserve. He was ordered to active military service in July 2017 in support of U.S. military operations in Europe.
After being notified that Maiocco’s military service had been extended to January 2020, both the board and Maiocco believe a separation agreement is in the best interest of the district, according to district officials.
Under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act, the board was required to negotiate the financial terms of this separation agreement.
The school board released a statement Monday night:
“We are very proud of Dr. Maiocco’s service to our country and we are grateful for his 10 years of strong leadership and vision for the District. Dr. Maiocco has provided the foundation to continue our work toward the goal of becoming a premier school district as we continue with Vision 2025.”
The Board will now explore options for replacing Maiocco. Tricia Mooney has been serving as interim superintendent in Maiocco’s absence. She is under contract through June 2019.
The board will have to decide how to fill the superintendent position on a permanent basis. Options include appointing Mooney as the new permanent superintendent or to begin a superintendent search process.
The board said it will begin deliberations regarding these options at its Sept. 10 board meeting.
