Dorothy Joan Vetter of Hermiston passed away at her home in Hermiston
surrounded by her family on June 14, 2023 at the age of 87.
She was born on Feb. 2, 1936 in Emmett, Idaho to Dallas and Lena Thompson
Queen.
As a child Dorothy moved with her family to Walla Walla, Wash., where she lived
for several years. She attended high school at McLoughlin High School in Milton-
Freewater, graduating in the class of 1954.
Dorothy married Ronald Moon and the couple had four children. They divorced
several years later. Dorothy lived in Pendleton until her marriage to Julius “Jay”
Vetter on April 22, 1970 in Portland. She and her four children were active
members of the Community Baptist Church.
Dorothy moved to the Stanfield/Hermiston area in the early 1970s, where she
had lived until her passing. She worked as a CPA and licensed tax preparer for
Virginia Vincent for many years. She also worked as a bookkeeper for the
Umatilla Baptist Church for several years.
She enjoyed learning and continued taking college courses even after earning
her degree as a certified public accountant. She took pride in being an active
member of the American Business Women’s Association. Dorothy was a proud
member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She enjoyed cross-
country skiing, painting, crafting and sewing clothes for her family. When she
was younger, she would go camping and hunting with her parents. Dorothy was
even known to turn a wrench or two, as she was mechanically inclined like her
father.
Dorothy had a large church family and enjoyed singing in the choir. In her later
years, she became a member of the Stanfield Baptist Church. She served her community throughout her lifetime including volunteering as a patient advocate,
helping protect patients from being overcharged for their medical services.
She is survived by four children, Ron Moon, Pamela Moon-Mayberry, Diane
Eveland and Christine Howell; two step-daughters, Viki Desler and Jan Schroth;
18 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren; and several extended family members.

grandson, Gary Powney Jr.
