A Brief Look at Each of the 27 Mayors Throughout Hermiston’s History

The city of Hermiston has had 27 mayors in its 117-year history. Some served for more than a decade and one served for just a single meeting. Three died in office, while one served multiple terms separated by more than a decade. Here’s a list of each of Hermiston’s mayors dating back to 1907:

  • George H. Car – July 10, 1907 to January 1908
  • James Griffin – January 14, 1908 (received oath of office, took chair and resigned that same meeting)
  • Fred A. Yates – January 22, 1908 to January 1909
  • Harvey Ross (H.R.) Newport – January 1909 to January 1912
  • H.A. Waterman – February 1912 to December 1912
  • W.H. Skinner – January 1913 to December 1914
  • F.C. McKenzie (first terms served) – January 1915 to December 1922
  • W.W. Illsley – January 2023 to September 1923
  • R.C. Todd – September 19, 1923 to November 1924
  • F.V. Prime – November 1924 to December 1928
  • Charles S. (C.S.) McNaught – January 1929 to December 1930
  • A.W. Prann – January 1931 to December 1932
  • F.C. McKenzie (second terms served) – January 1933 to December 1946
  • Leander Quiring – January 1947 to December 1950
  • John Lienhard – January 1951 to June 1952
  • A.F. Rohrman – June 1952 to December 1954
  • George W. Harkenrider – January 1955 to December 1956
  • Charles A. Thomas Jr. – January 1957 to October 1957 (died in office)
  • Frank M. Wells – October 1957 to December 1958
  • William H. Belt – January 1959 to December 1960
  • Walter M. Pearson – January 1961 to December 1970
  • Lawrence P. Gray – January 1971 to December 1982
  • R.R. “Whitey” Schroth – January 1983 to December 1986
  • William E. Neuffer – January 1987 to April 1, 1990 (died in office)
  • Frank J. Harkenrider – April 1990 to December 2000
  • Robert E. “Bob” Severson – January 2001 to December 2012 (died in office)
  • David Drotzmann – December 2012 to present
