The city of Hermiston is now accepting applications to join the 2024 Hermiston Civic Leadership Academy, a chance for residents to grow their leadership skills and find civic engagement opportunities.
The Academy is an innovative civic leadership training model developed in partnership with Portland State University’s National Policy Consensus Center and the Greater Hermiston Chamber of Commerce. It is designed to build a strong and diverse pool of talented future leaders for Hermiston’s local committees, boards, and organizations.
During the six-week course, members will learn how local government works, hone their collaborative and community engagement skills, research a topic of local importance to develop a presentation to the Hermiston City Council, and build stronger relationships with community members and local leaders.
Applicants must be 16 or older, live full-time within the Hermiston city limits, and be able to attend academy sessions each Tuesday from April 9 through May 14 from 5:30 – 8 p.m. at Hermiston City Hall. There will be approximately 30 minutes of “homework” between each session.
No prior government, leadership, or educational experience is required, and priority will be given to people who are new to civic and community leadership. To ensure the Academy is accessible to all community members, dinner, childcare, transportation, and translation services will be available.
