Five Armand Larive Middle School students were named finalists in the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) 2023 Broadcast Story of the Year competition for junior high/middle schools.
The finalists are Brooklin Bacon, Avery Devin, Sofia Rodriguez, and Kylie Virgil for their story titled “The Human Bean,” about the construction of a coffee shop being built in Hermiston. Jakoby Rodriguez was also recognized for his story titled “What got them into coaching?” a story about the Hermiston High Schools girls’ basketball team coaches.
NSPA holds its annual middle school level contest each spring. Students’ stories are selected for the finalist round based on criteria such as camera work, audio quality, lighting, interviewing skills, and storytelling. The stories from ALMS are two of just six finalists in the broadcast category.
The winners from the finalist round will be selected and announced at the JEA/NSPA Fall National High School Journalism Convention in Boston, Mass., on Saturday, Nov. 4.
The videos were submitted in June of last school year, and the finalists were students in Rob Doherty’s Armand Larive TV (ALTV) class. ALTV broadcast students record and produce the school announcements, a monthly news show, and school athletic events. Class videos are archived on Vimeo.com.
