Authors Olympian Adam Goucher and Tim Catalano will meet with Hermiston High School athletes on Tuesday at 7 p.m. to discuss Running/Living the Life EXTRA-ordinary in the Hermiston High School auditorium.

Goucher and his wife, Kara, are best known for leading the charge in America’s running renaissance over the last decade. As a high school student, despite facing family and economic challenges as some students in the Hermiston School District face, Goucher was the student body president of his high school and the individual Foot Locker National Cross Country Champion. Goucher and Catalano were teammates at the University of Colorado where Goucher was an 11-time All-American and four-time national champion in cross country and track.

Upon graduation, Goucher signed a contract with a shoe company and ran professionally for 13 years, during which time he won eight individual U.S. championships and qualified for the world championship finals in cross country and track seven times. Goucher represented the United States in 2000 at the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. In the interim, Goucher worked as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Colorado.

Catalano was also a highly-recruited athlete out of high school and studied psychology at the University of Colorado. While there he helped his cross country teams place second and fourth nationally. Since graduating, Catalano has worked in education for the past 12 years as a teacher and coach. Goucher and Catalano reunited to write a book to help people take risks, set high goals, and develop healthy ways of achieving those goals. The pair’s work culminated in the publication of Running the Edge: Discover the Secrets to Better Running and a Better Life.

Copies of Running the Edge will be available for sale after the formal presentation. Goucher and Catalano will also be on site to sign and personalize books.

Goucher was the main character of Running with the Buffaloes: A Season Inside with Mark Wetmore, Adam Goucher, and The University of Colorado Men’s Cross Country Team – chronicling the University of Colorado’s Cross Country team’s quest for an NCAA team title. Kara Goucher authored Kara’s Goucher’s Running for Women: First Steps to Marathons.

All three books are available in the Hermiston High School library for student check out.
