Hermiston City Councilor Clara Beas-Fitzgerald has resigned and the recently-elected Roy Barron will fill out the remainder of her term.

Beas-Fitzgerald submitted a letter of resignation on July 12, informing City Manager Byron Smith that she was going to focus on “other priorities in her life.”

Beas-Fitzgerald was first elected to her Ward II seat in the spring of 2014. That seat was previously held by George Anderson, who chose not to run for re-election. In August 2014, Anderson stepped down and Beas-Fitzgerald was appointed to fill out the remainder of Anderson’s term. She was scheduled to take the oath of office in January 2015.

Now the tables have turned somewhat with Beas-Fitzgerald resigning prior to the completion of her term and her successor will step in to fill out her unexpired term. Barron was elected to the Ward II seat in May of this year and would have taken the oath of office in January 2019.
