Betty Kammerzell Passes Away at 91

Betty Jean Kammerzell of Hermiston passed away at her home in Hermiston surrounded by her family on Sept. 21, 2023 at the age of 91.

She was born on Nov. 28, 1931 in Enid, Okla. to Leo and May Dupus Maret.

Betty grew up and attended schools in Enid, Okla. She married John Henry Kammerzell in Vale on May 10, 1946. The couple moved to Hermiston in the late 1950s, where she had resided since. She worked from home raising her children and caring for her family.

Betty enjoyed traveling from Hermiston to Oklahoma to visit her family. She also enjoyed many day ventures with her longtime friend, Ruby. She was an avid quilter who gave many quilts to her family members and donated many more to community members. She enjoyed playing cards, especially pinochle. Betty was a great cook and was known for her fried chicken, Indian fry bread and homemade noodles, as well as many other dishes.

She is survived by her children, Loretta (Randy) Wells, Patsy Sanborn, Henrietta Huntley, George (Tina) Kammerzell and Tom Kammerzell; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother, Connie (Pat) Maret; and many extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Kammerzell; an infant son, Jimmy Doyle Kammerzell; son, Johnny Lee Kammerzell; and brother, Bill Maret.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2023 at Burns Mortuary of Hermiston, 685 W. Hermiston Ave.

Burial will follow in the Hermiston Cemetery.
