Blue Mountain Community College is proud to announce Gavin Burt as the new head men’s basketball coach for the Timberwolves.
Burt served as a head assistant and assistant coach for the BMCC team from 2012-2014 and in 2015-2016 under former head coach Adam Ellis, who resigned late last spring to take an assistant coaching job at St. Martin’s University in Lacey, Wash.
Burt has not only worked with BMCC as an assistant coach, but he’s also a former Timberwolf player. Burt played basketball for BMCC from 2010-2012. He was named interim head coach following Ellis’ departure, and rose to the top of the four applicants BMCC received for the head coaching position over the summer.
“Gavin knows Blue Mountain and is very invested in our program here,” said BMCC Athletic Director Brett Bryan.
Burt is excited for his first head coaching role, especially since it’s at his alma mater.
“I’m really looking forward to impacting the kids’ lives in a positive way both on and off the floor,” he said. “I want to help them understand the importance of earning that two-year degree while at the same time having an opportunity to continue their athletic careers.”
Burt spent the summer as interim head coach recruiting players for the 2016-2017 season. He said he has five returning players, though two of those red-shirted last year. New recruits include local talent from Athena, La Grande and Irrigon. In addition, he recruited players from California, Nevada and Idaho to fill out the new roster.
These new players can expect the same coaching philosophy from Burt as he received from his former high school coach in Washington – be disciplined on and off the floor, and in your community. The local community will have an opportunity to see the men’s team off the court this fall – Burt said he has plans for several community service projects for the team.
