Standout Blue Mountain Community College basketball player Jared Mathews on Wednesday signed a National Letter of Intent to play for Saint Martin’s University.

Mathews, who is in his second year at BMCC, will transfer to the Lacey, Wash., university this fall. Mathews is a power forward from Bakersfield, Calif., who is studying to become a mechanical engineer.

He ended the 2016-2017 season as the No. 3 rebounder in the Northwest Athletic Conference, and led his team in rebounding with 10.67 per game. He also led his team, along with teammate Isaiah Harris, with a 53% field goal average, and was second in 3 point baskets made behind teammate Linton McAllister.

Mathews’ success on the court led to him being named to the NWAC All-East Region Second Team last month.

“Jared came to BMCC as a very skilled low post player,” said Head Men’s Basketball Coach Gavin Burt. “His ability to finish with his left and right hand on multiple fundamental moves makes him a great four-year prospect. He continues to work on new angles of his game while adding strength and size to his frame. He will be a great addition for Coach Pribble on and off the court at Saint Martin’s University.”

Mathews is also a great student off the court and in the classroom.

“Jared has set himself up for this great opportunity to continue his college career by putting in a great deal of effort in his academics,” Burt said. “He takes his classes seriously and it shows as he consistently puts up a great GPA for each quarter.”
