Two Blue Mountain Community College volleyball players will continue their collegiate athletic careers next fall, and on Tuesday signed their National Letters of Intent.

Karly Cantu will play beach volleyball next year for Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, Calif., while Kylee Chavez will head to Sioux City, Iowa, in the fall to play for Morningside College.

Cantu, a 5’5” setter and defensive specialist from Spokane, Wash., will continue to study nursing at Vanguard, where she’ll play pairs beach volleyball. She said she appreciates her time at BMCC, where she learned a lot about living on her own and becoming a member of a community.

“I’ll miss my teammates, friends and my community here in Pendleton,” Cantu said. “But I’m looking forward to something different and being by the beach.”

Chavez, a 5’8” setter from Victorville, Calif., will study biology with hopes of attending dental school following her time at Morningside College. While at BMCC, Cantu said she learned that “hard work pays off in every aspect of life.”

Both Cantu and Chavez, who played for the Timberwolves for two seasons, were members of the 2015 NWAC Championship team, and BMCC Head Coach Jessica Humphreys said they’ve been strong assets tothe team.

“Kylee took over the team’s offense this year, finishing strong with more than 11 assists per set,” Humphreys said. “Karly played a pivotal role in the utility position, playing defense and setting where the team’s needs presented. Both will be strong contributors to their prospective programs. We are sad to see them leave, but also excited and wish them the best in their future collegiate careers.”
