It’s not every day a coach has the opportunity to launch a brand new athletic program. Yet that’s exactly what the new head women’s soccer coach at Blue Mountain Community College will get to do.

BMCC is looking for the right person for the job, and is accepting applications for the head coaching position now, with the hopes of hiring a new coach by December.

“This is a pretty important time in athletics at BMCC, so we want to bring in someone who’s going to do a dynamic job in launching this new program,” said Diane Drebin, Vice President of Student Affairs at BMCC. “We need someone with a lot of enthusiasm and excitement.”

The ideal coach will understand that student athletes at BMCC are students first, athletes second, and that character and community are a strong part of those roles. As a coach, they’ll serve as a role model to assist team members in developing and displaying appropriate attitudes and behavior expected of BMCC athletes.

The program received a boost this month with grant awards from both the Wildhorse Foundation and the Pendleton Foundation Trust to help fund start-up costs of soccer at BMCC. The Pendleton Foundation Trust awarded the program $14,000, while the Wildhorse Foundation granted $5,000 for equipment.

“We’re so appreciative of both the Wildhorse Foundation and Pendleton Foundation Trust for their support of our soccer program,” Drebin said.

The new soccer program will begin play in the Northwest Athletic Conference in the fall of 2016. A men’s team will launch in the fall of 2017.
