A Boardman teenager drowned Friday in the Columbia River – the second Morrow County teen to drown in the past five weeks.
Gavin Ryce Roberts, an 18-year-old Riverside High School graduate, died early Friday morning in the McCormick Slough near the Umatilla National Wildlife Refuge.
The Morrow County Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call about the drowning around 3:53 a.m. Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the sheriff’s office, Irrigon Fire Department and EMS, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, Umatilla Fire Department and Washington-based Skamania County Sheriff’s Office Dive Rescue Team. The agencies launched boats, and the dive rescue team recovered the body at about 11:13 a.m.
The incident is still under investigation.
There will be a celebration of life pot luck at 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 18 at the Riverside Junior/Senior High School Auditorium.
In early June, 18-year-old Irrigon resident Dylan Jones Jones Vicory died after being pulled out of the Columbia River.
