Bulldog Wrestlers Win 5A State Title

Hermiston won its seventh Oregon 5A wrestling title in eight years Saturday night in Portland Memorial Coliseum.

Three Bulldogs are state champions – Liam Tarvin at 106, Isaac Aguilar at 120 and Samuel Colbray at 195.

In team standings, Hermiston earned 174 points to defeat Dallas (145.5), Lebanon (134) and Eagle Point (111). The Bulldogs had wrapped up the 5A team title before the finals began.

Samuel Colbray repeated as champion by defeating West Albany’s Jackson Soto 7-3. He finished 49-0 for the year.

Isaac Aguilar, a senior, decisioned Churchill’s Jake Ayers 9-6 to win the 120-pound state championship.

Liam Tarvin, a sophomore, defeated Mountain View’s Conner Duhn 12-2 at 106 pounds.

Two other Bulldogs lost in the semifinals.

At 126 pounds, Valen Wyse fell to two-time champion Matt Hoffenbredl of Dallas, 5-2. At 285 pounds, Armando Garcia was decisioned 2-1 by Semise Kofe of Roosevelt.

The Bulldogs previously won in 2007-2011 under Curt Berger, and again in 2013 and 2014 under Shawn Williams.

Friday results: Hermiston scored 85.5 team points to take a 13-point lead over Lebanon after the first two rounds of the OSAA Class 5A wrestling tournament in Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Friday, according to The Oregonian.

Dallas is close behind with 69 points, followed by Churchill (66), Eagle Point (59.5) and Sandy (58).

The Bulldogs qualified a Class 5A-high 16 wrestlers for state, and 11 survived Friday’s championship and consolation-round action, The Oregonian reported.

Hermiston, Lebanon and Dallas each advanced five wrestlers to the semis, while Eagle Point, Sandy and Churchill have four.
