Cathy Lynette Stolz died on April 26, 2023 at her home in Hermiston at the age of 73.
She was born on June 26, 1949 in Omak, Wash., to William and Dorothy Stolz.
They lived in the logging community of Disatel, Wash. until the family moved in 1952 to Mount Vernon, where her father Bill continued logging. Cathy had two brothers: Gary, three years older, and Troy, two years younger. She attended Mount Vernon schools, graduating from Mount Vernon High in 1967. While in high school she served as the Mount Vernon Bear mascot, costume and all. She then attended Multnomah School of the Bible in Portland, receiving an AA degree. Having trusted in Jesus Christ as her Savior years earlier, she wanted to serve Him in every way possible.
Later Cathy moved to the Chicago area to work for the Moody Bible Institute’s monthly magazine, later serving as graphics editor. After several years, Cathy moved back to Oregon in 1980. She worked for a time for the East Oregonian Publishing Company before joining her mother Dorothy and stepfather Duane Beason at the Chuckwagon Cafe. Upon Duane’s death in 1985, Cathy, along with Dorothy, took over operation of the Chuckwagon, only taking a break in 1992 to travel through Europe by train for a month. She also got her private pilot’s license. During her time running the cafe, she gained countless friendships and was known for her kindness and gentle manner, as well as sharing her love for Jesus. She also sponsored several community activities during her ownership. Every year she helped run the popular Thanksgiving/Christmas community dinners, providing food management expertise. In 2019, Cathy sold the Chuckwagon.
After her 39 years with the Chuckwagon, Cathy became active with the American Legion Auxiliary, eventually serving as president until her passing. She loved veterans; her own father, stepfather, brother Gary, and nephew Scott served their country.
Cathy is survived by brother, Gary Stolz (Marilyn); goddaughter, Tressa Soles of Weippe, Idaho; her aunt, Evelyn Jaquish of East Wenatchee, Wash.; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by parents, William and Dorothy; stepfather, Duane Beason; and brother, Troy.
At her request, there will be no service.
