The cause of a brush fire that broke out Wednesday afternoon is under investigation.
The Umatilla County Fire District No. 1 was dispatched to a brush fire on Cooney Lane just before 4 p.m.
Upon arrival, firefighters came across a fire moving towards the north and south. Crews were assigned to divisions and stopped the fire from spreading toward nearby structures. Mutual aid was provided by Umatilla Rural Fire Protection District, Echo Fire Department, Pendleton Fire & Ambulance, Irrigon Fire Department, Boardman Fire Rescue District, Oregon State Police, Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office, Bureau of Indian Affairs and U.S. Forest Service – Umatilla National Forest.
Crews were on fire watch throughout the night. No injuries were reported.
The National Weather Service out of Pendleton issued a Fire Weather Watch for the Lower Columbia Basin on Wednesday that will remain in effect until 11 p.m. on Saturday, July 1. Hot, breezy and dry conditions are expected to remain through Saturday evening. Winds are forecast to reach 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.
The high temperature for today is forecast to be 98 with a high of 101 expected on Saturday.
