A science classroom at was closed off to staff and students at Pendleton High School following a chemical spill during class Wednesday afternoon.

No students were injured in the incident, however, the teacher was examined by medical staff and found to be OK. The student sitting closest to the spill was evaluated in the school-based health center as a precautionary measure, but was found to be fine.

Sulfuric acid dropped onto a hot plate during a routine science experiment in the chemistry class and vaporized into the air, causing the concern. School officials turned on a special ventilation system in the classroom to clear the air, and that system will remain on overnight to further clean the classroom.

The Pendleton Fire Department responded and determined the spill did not require hazmat cleanup, and noted school officials responded appropriately.

“Our staff and students have practiced safety procedures for these types of situations, and the students followed those procedures exactly as they should have today,” said Tricia Mooney, assistant superintendent of the Pendleton School District. “We’re so proud of how our students responded to the situation.”
