Connie Nicodemus, Title 1 teacher at Desert View Elementary, wrote and applied for a Hermiston Education Foundation grant to bring the author to the area. The Hermiston Education Foundation granted $5,000, awarded Altrusa International of Hermiston$700 and each elementary and middle school or PTO contributed $1,000.

Teachers and students at the elementary level have been reading Smith’s books in anticipation of his visit. Highland Hills and Desert View elementary schools are also conducting a writing contest to promote writing. The selected winners will have lunch with the author at the school.

An order form was sent home that allowed parents to order either the book B is for Beaver or Storm Runners. Roland Smith will be available to autograph purchased books during Parent Night at Armand Larive Middle School, on Oct 5, from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Parents and student of all ages are welcome to attend.

Smith and his wife, Marie, live on a small farm south of Portland. He enjoys spending days in his basement writing stories about animals. He also loves to travel and visiting schools.
