Hermiston will elect a new mayor in next year, but who that will be remains to be seen.
As of this morning, two candidates have filed to run for mayor and both of them are current Hermiston City Council members.
Councilor Nancy Peterson was the first to file on Oct. 13. Peterson was first elected to the council in November 2020.
Council Jackie Linton filed on Oct. 25. Linton was elected to the council in November 2022.
Both are vying to succeed Mayor Dave Drotzmann, who is running for state Senate.
Hermiston Municipal Judge Cameron Bendixsen has filed to run for re-election. No other candidates have filed for that position.
Candidates were eligible to file beginning Sept. 14.
Those interested in running for mayor or municipal court judge have until March 12, 2024 to file. The election for Hermiston mayor and municipal court judge will be held on May 21, 2024.
The mayor’s four-year term will run from Jan. 1, 2025 to Dec. 31, 2028.
The two-year term for municipal court judge runs from Jan. 1, 2025 to Dec. 31, 2026.
Filing forms are available in the administrative office at City Hall, 180 N.E. Second St.
