City of Hermiston Offering Summer Camps, Clinics and More

The Hermiston Parks and Recreation Department is offering a slew of camps and clinics to keep you busy this summer. Here’s a rundown of what’s coming up:

Dust Devils Youth Baseball Clinic – This annual clinic, hosted by the Tri-City Dust Devils and Lourdes Health Network, allows children to interact with and learn from the San Diego Padres’ stars of tomorrow. The clinic is on Sunday, July 23 and runs from 4 to 6 p.m. It’s free with the purchase of tickets to that evening’s game against the Eugene Emeralds at Gesa Stadium in Pasco through Hermiston Parks and Recreation. Tickets are $8. The clinic is open to any age but is recommended for kids 4 through 14. The signup deadline is Friday, July 7.

Summer Choir – The Hermiston Summer Choir will be organized and directed by Jordan Bemrose, choir teacher at Hermiston High School. It is open to all community members 14 and older, and no audition is required. Rehearsals are Monday through Friday, July 17-21 from 6 to 8 p.m. in room 109 at the high school. The cost is $15 for residents and $19 for non-residents to cover sheet music expenses. The choir will perform on Saturday, July 22 at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium. The signup deadline is Friday, July 7.

Youth Photography Camp – This camp is for kids age 6 through 14 years and will run from Monday through Thursday, July 17-20 from 1 to 3 p.m. Participants will learn the basics of digital photography from the pros at 60 Minute Photo in Hermiston. The cost is $55 for residents and $68 for non-residents, and includes two 8×10 photos, enlargements and matting. Participants must supply their own digital cameras. The camp takes place at 60 Minute Photo. The signup deadline is Friday, July 14.

Club Invention: Passage to Planet ROG – During this new four-day camp at the Hermiston Conference Center, children will travel to a distant planet and develop a number of different devices to help them solve problems in space and on the planet. The camp is for first- through sixth-graders and runs Monday through Thursday, July 17-20 from 9 to 11 a.m. The cost is $59 for residents and $73 for non-residents. The signup deadline is Friday, July 7.

Club Invention: Bolder Builders – Another new four-day camp will have children joining engineer, architect and builder Archie Tek in the restoration of a town. The camp is for first- through sixth-graders and runs Monday through Thursday, Aug. 7-10 from 1 to 3 p.m. It’s also at the Hermiston Conference Center. The cost is $59 for residents and $73 for non-residents. The signup deadline is Friday, July 21.

Teen Tuesdays – The Hermiston Family Aquatic Center has set aside four Tuesday nights this summer for teens only. You must be at least 13 but not yet 17. The dates are July 11, 18 and 25, and Aug. 1. The hours are 9 to 11 p.m. Registration is not required, and the cost is $5 at the door.

Teen River Exploration Day – A variety of river recreational activities, water safety instruction and much more are planned for teens 13 through 17 on Thursday, July 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Columbia River. Activities and instruction will be provided by a Corp of Engineers ranger. Opportunities to swim and lunch will be provided. The cost is $25 for residents and $31 for non-residents. No experience is necessary, but you must know how to swim. Personal flotation devices will be provided. Participants will meet at city hall. The signup deadline is Friday, July 7.

Country 2-Step, Swing and More – Join instructor April Dyntera on Saturday, July 15 at the Arc building in Hermiston to learn basic country dance steps or add to what you already know. Dances will include the country 2-step, 6-count swing, barroom 2-step, east coast swing, and 10-step shuffle.

No partner is required. Wear comfortable shoes that allow you to easily make turning steps.

Instruction runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with an hour for lunch. The class is for those 14 and older (14-17 must have an adult participating or watching the class). The cost is $30 for residents and $38 for non-residents. The signup deadline is Friday, July 7.
