The Hermiston City Council voted this week to contribute $20,000 toward the installation of a security fence at the Hermiston Airport.

The bulk of the fencing cost will come from the Federal Aviation Administration which has offered a grant up to $270,000 for the project. Also contributing to the cost will be the Eastern Oregon Trade and Event Center Authority which has agreed to put $10,000 toward the fencing at the airport. The combined $30,000 in local money more than meets the FAA’s 10-percent match requirements.

The city’s portion of the funding will come from the Airport Improvements Reserve account, which currently stands at $80,000. The project will fence the property off from the EOTEC site.

The six-foot tall fence will be 7,830 feet long. On Monday, the city council voted to award the project to Perimeter Security Group, which submitted the lowest bid. The total cost of the project is estimated at $221,000.
