Sunset Park in Hermiston will get a new look after the city won a contest for $20,000 worth of new playground equipment

David slew Goliath in the contest to win $20,000 worth of new playground equipment.

Hermiston Parks and Recreation Director Larry Fetter announced that Hermiston has won the contest put on by the Portland Trailblazers’ MODA Assist program. For more than a month, residents in Hermiston, Portland and Tillamook have been voting to see which city wins the equipment. The equipment was to go to the city with the most votes and when voting ended on Monday, Hermiston had tallied 19,519 votes to top Portland’s 15,424. Tillamook managed just 1,610 votes.

Fetter said the new equipment will be installed at Sunset Park located at Northeast Fourth Street. The park is one of Hermiston’s smallest at just around a half an acre. It was developed in 1985, but has been closed due to old, unsafe equipment.

No word from the parks department yet on what type of equipment will be installed or when.
