Members of The Human Bean ownership group recently presented a check for nearly $3,000 to the Good Shepherd Community Health Foundation. The money will be used to benefit the Good Shepherd Cancer Center.

Coffee businesses face stiff competition in big and small cities alike, but that didn’t stop The Human Bean in Hermiston to step up in a big way in the fight against cancer.

On Oct. 18, the coffee shop participated in Coffee for a Cure, a nationwide fundraiser in which all the proceeds from that day are donated to a local cancer center.

Recently, Cindy Granger and Brittany Beamer, members of The Human Bean’s ownership group, along with Brittany’s children, presented a check to the Good Shepherd Community Health Foundation for $2,935.16 to support the Good Shepherd Cancer Center.

Granger said The Human Bean franchises have been taking part in the fund-raising effort for the past 19 years. This year was the first one for the Hermiston franchise.

“Last year we opened a week too late to participate and have been looking forward to it all year,” Granger said. “We all have been touched in one way or another with a loved one being treated for cancer and this is a small way we can help.”

Granger said she was especially happy with the support of shop’s customers.

“Thanks to the wonderful community of Hermiston and their support of the cause, we feel the day was very successful,” she said. “We are very proud to be a part of the community and able to do a small part in helping those that are affected by cancer.”

Granger said she and her partners are looking forward to supporting the cause in the future.

“We hope to increase (the donation total) next year with more people becoming aware of the Coffee for a Cure fundraiser,” she said.

Liz Marvin, the health foundation’s executive director, said the funds will be held for the Good Shepherd Cancer Center’s use in a restricted fund by the foundation.
