The Cold Springs Highway railroad bridge located one mile east of U.S. 730 in northern Umatilla County will be closed beginning today through Oct. 26 for bridge repair work.

Travelers will need to use alternate routes during the five-week closure times. The eastbound detour route is via U.S. 730 to OR 207, then on U.S. 395 to Interstate 84 and into Pendleton, where the east end of the Cold Springs Highway connects. The westbound detour is the reverse. Local county routes near the closure area are not suitable for highway traffic.

The existing bridge’s deck is cracked, worn and uneven, with exposed rebar in places. The bridge railing does not meet current safety standards. The repairs will ensure the structure is safe and efficient for decades to come, and help protect the railroad that passes beneath it.

Notice of the closure was first shared with local residents in 2019 and has been listed in various media releases and on signs at the bridge site. More information is on Oregon Department of Transportation’s project website.

Please plan extra travel time to account for the detour and drive with extra caution.

Where traffic is routed through or around a work zone, pedestrians, including those with disabilities, will also be provided routes through or around the work zone.
