Candidates for the Hermiston City Council are making the rounds as next month’s Election Day draws near.

The four candidates seeking to join the council were at Monday night’s meeting and were prompted by Mayor Dave Drotzmann to step up to the microphone and say a few words.

“I see we have some candidates for city council here tonight,” Drotzmann said. “Now’s a perfect opportunity to introduce yourselves.”

Clara Beas Fitzgerald was the first to speak. Fitzgerald is running unopposed for the Ward 2 position currently held by City Councilor George Anderson, who is not running for another term.

Jim Leitch then introduced himself to the council and audience. Leitch is running against Councilor Jackie Myers for the Ward 3 seat.

Doug Smith and Cameron Bendixsen, who are running against each other to succeed Frank Harkenrider for the Ward 4 position, were next to speak at the microphone. Harkenrider announced earlier this year he would not seek re-election.

Jesus Rome was next to say a few words. Rome is running against Councilor Lori Davis for the Ward 1 seat.

The election will take place on May 20.
