The Hermiston City Council will discuss its “community identity” efforts during an hour-long work session prior to Monday night’s city council meeting.
In 2011, the Hermiston Futures Task Force heard community feedback that pointed out the need for the city to establish a “community identity.” A sub-group to the task force met throughout 2012 and early 2013 to examine Hermiston’s identity and to develop options for the future.
The “Hermiston: You can GROW here” concept was debuted for the public during the Umatilla County Fair. At Monday’s work session, the council will discuss the formation of the identity, work done so far to promote it, and future steps.
During the regular council meeting, the council will take up a resolution which would allow the mayor and council to appoint the same person for simultaneous service on two boards or committees.
“I personally think this would be a good thing for the city,” said Hermiston City Manager Ed Brookshier, in a memo the council and mayor. “There are occasions when you find citizens with the interest, commitment to service, and objectivity to serve well on more than one committee. When you encounter such individuals you should at least have the ability to consider the two-committee simultaneous service option.”
The proposal was first suggested by Councilor George Anderson at the Dec. 9 council meeting.
“It’s not like we have people breaking down the door to serve on committees,” he said.
The complete agenda and packet for Monday’s meeting can be found on the city’s website.
