Numbers from the first quarter of 2016 show crime has ticked up in Hermiston from a year ago, but remains well below the 10-year average, according to a report released by the Hermiston Police Department.
The total number of incidents is up 11 percent from the first quarter of 2015 and the total number of violent crime and property crime increased from a year ago, according to the report. Overall crime, however, is down 20 percent from the city’s 10-year average, while property crime is down 21 percent from the 10-year average, and violent crime is down 33 percent from the 10-year average.
During the first quarter of this year, there has been six aggravated assaults compared to just one a year ago. Burglary is up 11 percent from a year ago; larceny is up 16 percent; auto theft is down 42 percent from a year ago; and arson is down 100 percent (no cases this year compared to one a year ago).
There have been no homicides in Hermiston during the first quarter, compared to one a year ago. Like a year ago, there have no reports of robbery during the first three months of the year.
Incidents of juvenile crime are considerably down from a year ago, according to the report. HPD processed 55 juveniles for various offenses during the first three months of 2016, compared to 69 a year ago – a decrease of 20 percent.
