Dale Zumwalt Passes Away at 87

“Pastor Dale” Zumwalt of Hermiston died on Aug. 11, 2018 in Kennewick, Wash. at the age of 87.

He was born on April 23, 1931 in Lebanon, Mo. to Eugene and Phleda York Zumwalt.

Dale was raised in Missouri, Arkansas and Oregon. He was united in marriage to Mary “Helen” Wayland on July 6, 1949 in Arkansas. Dale worked in the logging industry for several years as a young man and in his early adult years. They moved to Oregon in 1949. He became a minister with the Assemblies of God in 1955. They returned to Arkansas in 1959 before moving back to Oregon in 1967. He pastored congregations in Arkansas, Stanfield, Fossil, Mitchell and Lexington for over 40 years. They moved to Hermiston in 2014.

In his later years, he learned to shop, cook, clean, do laundry and be a devoted caregiver to his wife. Dale was a “jack of all trades,” whether building you a house or repairing the existing one, fixing your vehicle or lawn mower, repairing appliances, cutting firewood, raising a garden and fruit trees, catching fish for dinner and ministering to your spiritual needs. He was dedicated to the Lord, his family and helping others. Dale enjoyed building, fishing, reading, gardening and visiting with his family or one of his countless friends he made over the years.

He is survived by his son, Larry Zumwalt and wife Barbara, Tacoma, Wash.; daughter, Kathy Zumwalt-Smith and husband John, Hermiston; brother, Bill Zumwalt, Arizona; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Dale was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Helen Zumwalt; a son, Ron Zumwalt; his parents; siblings, George Zumwalt, Elmer Zumwalt, Wanda Zumwalt Cowgil Ziegenhirt, Ava Zumwalt Johnson and Maxie Zumwalt Thieme.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 18, 2018 at 10 a.m. at Burns Mortuary Chapel, Hermiston.

Private family burial will be held later at the Hermiston Cemetery.
