The workforce at the Umatilla Chemical Agent Disposal Facility (UMCDF) has been cut to less than 100 employees. after a Reduction in Force (RIF) is completed today (Feb. 27).
Thursday’s Reduction in Force (RIF) is tied to the project’s “demolition complete” milestone, which was reached Feb. 7. The Munitions Demilitarization Building, where the chemical weapons and agent were destroyed, was demolished in accordance with the project’s operating permit with the state, along with the associated pollution abatement systems.
A total of 60 positions are being eliminated, including a dozen workers from closure organizations and 48 from support departments such as engineering, accounting, IT and medical.
UMCDF has conducted several RIFs since the project completed chemical agent operations in October 2011, all coinciding with a significant closure milestone.
The project has approximately 90 employees remaining after Thursday’s RIF. When the project completed destruction of Oregon’s chemical weapons stockpile it had about 830 employees.
Closure work is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The next RIF is expected in July.
