The Hermiston City Council approved findings of fact Monday night that lays the groundwork for annexing nearly 14 acres of land for a new subdivision.

Developer Jeff Newman is requesting the city to annex 13.8 acres of land near the Desert Sky Estates. Newman is proposing to develop the property into a single-family subdivision with 31 lots.

The property is located on the south side of S.W. Desert Sky Drive and just west of S. First Street.

The property has single-family homes to the north and west with single-family development to the south and east.  The general character of the neighborhood is low density residential.

Access to the proposed subdivision would be from S.W. Third Street in the Desert Sky Estates subdivision.

At its Aug. 12 meeting, the Hermiston Planning Commission made a unanimous recommendation that the city council annex the property with the proposed R-1 or single-family residential zoning designation.

Newman is proposing to annex only a portion of the existing 56 acre lot and has submitted applications for both the minor partitions and the subdivision. As a result, he will have to file the minor partition plat with Umatilla County prior to the land being annexed.

On Monday, the council voted to accept the findings of fact and will vote on the actual annexation ordinance at a future meeting.

  1. We need more apartments and affordable rental homes around here. Especially now more than ever. Nobody can afford a house when Corona is destroying people’s lives and taking their jobs
