The Hermiston School District announced today that it is partnering with Code.org to bring computer science instruction to the classroom.

Code.org is a public 501.c.3 nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing computer science to every school and increasing participation by women and underrepresented students of color. With the help of Code.org, the district can provide no-cost, one-day workshops for elementary school teachers interested in teaching computer science.

Incorporating computer science into K-5 classrooms will give students a leg up, as computer science is about higher-order thinking: logic, problem solving, and creativity.

Each 20-hour course includes a variety of lessons, many of which are “unplugged” (no device needed) and incorporate real life examples and alignment with Common Core State Standards.
