DOC Investigating Two Rivers' Inmate Death

An Oregon Department of Corrections (DOC) inmate died unexpectedly Saturday at a Portland-area hospital. He was housed at Two Rivers Correctional Institution (TRCI) in Umatilla.

As with all unanticipated deaths in state prisons, the Oregon State Police Criminal Investigation Division is conducting an investigation.

Two Rivers staff found inmate Joel Abbot, 60, in his cell unresponsive Saturday, Feb. 27. He was transported off-site for medical care at approximately 10:30 a.m. Abbot was pronounced deceased at 5:05 p.m.

Abbot entered DOC custody on March 23, 1993, on one count of murder in the first degree out of Deschutes County. He was serving a life sentence.

TRCI is a multi-custody prison in Umatilla that houses approximately 1,800 male inmates.
