The cause of a house fire in Hermiston Wednesday morning that resulted in the death of a pet dog is under investigation.
Umatilla County Fire District No. 1 was dispatched at 9:32 a.m. to a structure fire on S.W. Ninth Street. Upon arrival, smoke was showing from the eaves, indicating a working fire that got into the attic space.
According to the fire district, Incident Command ordered crews to force entry and make an offensive attack where they stretched hose lines inside the home. Crews coordinated ventilation with fire attack to suppress the fire.
Both Umatilla Rural Fire Protection District and the Echo Fire Department provided mutual aid to the scene and Pendleton Fire & Ambulance sent a medic unit to Station 21 for ambulance coverage.
During the primary search inside the home, firefighters found a pet dog that suffered from smoke inhalation. Crews attempted to resuscitate the dog, however, those efforts were unsuccessful. No injuries to people were reported.
