Donald R. “Don” Bloom of Hermiston, loving husband and dad, passed away on June 16, 2021 in Hermiston at the age of 76.
He was born on March 24, 1945 in Hermiston to Ed and Elmo Price Bloom.
He grew up on the family farm and got married in the mid-1960s to Mary Williams. With their two children, Glenn and Dawn (Mathis), they moved to Portland so that he could become a fulltime fireman. After joining the Hermiston Volunteer Fire Department, Don could not see himself doing anything else. After securing a position with Fire District 10, he met and married the love of his life, Sharon Moffett. His passion for his career grew, and he moved off the line and became a Multnomah County fire marshal and later was annexed into the city of Portland. Although firefighting was his passion, he never said no to an opportunity to operate heavy equipment and when hunting season came around, he returned to Eastern Oregon. Don never knew a stranger; he would talk to everyone.
He is survived by his children, Glenn (wife Shannon), Dawn, and stepson Shawn South (wife Sue); grandchildren, Ken Mathis, Lisa Perry, Jessica, Jason Bloom and Steven Bloom; great grandchildren, Evelynn Perry, Darcy Bloom and Tyler Bloom; brothers, Sam, Bill, Elmer, Harry and Alan; sister, Barbara; as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Elmo; his wife, Sharon; brothers, Ed and Charles; sisters, Ida and Karen; and daughter-in-law, Brigitte.
At his request, there will be no service. A small gathering will be held for family and close friends.
The family requests that, instead of flowers, donations be made to the Volunteer Association at Umatilla County Fire District #1 (memo -volunteer association/Bloom), where his career began.
