Doris Josephine Martin died Friday, March 22, 2013 at her home in Hermiston at the age of 89.

She was born Aug. 10, 1923 at Tampa, Fla., to, Marshall D. and Cassie (Hogan) Norman.

She was raised in Tampa and graduated from Hillsborough High School. She graduated from secretarial college and worked as a receptionist for a physician before meeting her future husband at a USO club dance. On Dec. 20, 1943, she married Patrick Allen Martin in Tampa. They lived in several locations with Pat serving in the military including Rapid City, S.D., Topeka, Kans, Long Beach, Calif., and McChord AFB in Tacoma, Wash. Finally, after serving in Korea, they moved to Hermiston in 1954. After her father retired and moved to Hermiston and her youngest son, Bruce, became his gardening and fishing partner, Doris went back to work as a bookkeeper for Stewart’s Market, and then as secretary to superintendents Armand Larive and Richard Scott of the Hermiston School District. After retirement, her and Pat traveled a lot and were snowbirds, spending winters in Yuma, Ariz., and living in Nehalem. After Pat passed in 1995, she volunteered as bookkeeper for the Hermiston Police Department and then the Hermiston Senior Center for many years. Doris was a member of the Church of Christ. She enjoyed sewing, oil painting, gardening, and she loved roses.

She is survived by three sons, Mike Martin of Hermiston, Dana Martin of Hillsboro, and Bruce (BC) Martin of Hermiston; brother, Morris Norman of Tampa, Fla.; three grandchildren, Julie Smith, John Martin, and Scott Lonergan; two great-grandchildren, Gracie and Drew Martin.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick “Pat” Martin in 1995; and parents, Marshall and Cassie Norman.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Burns Mortuary Chapel in Hermiston. A luncheon will follow at the Hermiston Senior Center. Private family burial of cremains will be at the Hermiston Cemetery.
