Doris E. Wicks of Hermiston passed away on July 23, 2018 in Richland, Wash. surrounded by family at the age of 84.
She was born on May 6, 1934 in New Plymouth, Idaho to Elmer and Helen Lake Carpenter.
Doris was raised by her grandparents, Alfred and Mary Carpenter. She attended elementary school in New Plymouth, and middle school and high school in Midvale, Idaho. Doris was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Franklin Eugene “Gene” Wicks on June 17, 1951 in Midvale. Gene was stationed in Savannah, Ga., where they started their family with the birth of their first son, Darrell. They returned to Weiser, Idaho for a short time where their second son, Steve was born. They moved to Pilot Rock in 1956 and while visiting family in Midvale, Idaho, son, Richard was born.
Doris worked at Bulbaros Grocery Store for five years. In 1964, they settled in Hermiston, and she worked for Sigmans IGA. Doris then worked 23 years at Safeway before retiring. She enjoyed her co-workers and customers, many of whom remained friends for life. Doris and Gene then spent the next 10 years traveling in their motorhome before Gene passed away in 2010.
She enjoyed working outside in her gardens and traveling with her family. Doris was a member of Grace Baptist Church, where she enjoyed worship, Bible study, and planning the music for Sunday services. Doris will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.
She is survived by her sons, Steve Wicks and wife Mavis, Parkersburg, Iowa and Richard Wicks and wife Gina, Hermiston; daughter-in-law, MaryAnn Wicks, Kettle Falls, Wash.; brother, Gary Carpenter, Asotin, Wash.; cousins, Hazel Brown, Hayden Lake, Idaho and Sybil Irving, Stanfield; 10 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Gene; her parents; and her oldest son, Darrell.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Grace Baptist Church, 555 N.W. 11th St., Hermiston. Burial will be in Midvale, Idaho.
