A motorist was killed Monday afternoon in a single-vehicle accident on E. Main Street in Hermiston.

Officers from the Hermiston Police Department responded at 12:46 a.m. to a report of a crash on the 700 block of E. Main Street. Upon arrival, officers found a silver 2001 Honda Civic on fire with three people either ejected or removed from the wreckage.

Jose Angel Padilla Canare, 22, believed to be the driver, was pronounced deceased on scene. His passengers, Santos Altamirano Lopez, 19, and Axel Flores Salas, 20, sustained serious injuries and were transported via LifeFlight to regional hospitals.

According to the police, the on-scene investigation indicated the car left the roadway at a high rate of speed after failing to navigate the corner, struck a tree and rolled until it came to rest upside down, where it then caught fire. At this point in the investigation, it is believed the crash occurred due to excessive speed, and no other vehicles or individuals are known to have been a factor in this crash. HPD officers spoke with the families of those involved.

HPD said this is an active investigation and is requesting anyone with additional information or who may have witnessed this crash to contact the Hermiston police.

Tragic for all involved. I don’t count a 2001 Civic as a fast car. But every day and night around Hermiston you can hear muscle cars roaring up and down our streets. Such accidents are inevitable.
