A Baker City man received only minor injuries Monday morning after reportedly falling asleep while driving and crashing into a metal highway sign post along Interstate 84 about 10 miles west of Huntington in Eastern Oregon.
The driver, Hector Torres, 25, of Baker City, was extricated and taken to a Baker City hospital for treatment of injuries.
According to OSP Sgt. Ty Duby, Torres was driving westbound on I-84 near milepost 333 in a 1993 Geo at approximately 7:30 a.m., when the car traveled off the freeway and rolled before crashing violently against a metal highway sign post. The vehicle was totaled in the accident.
Torres was extricated by personnel from Huntington Fire Department and Baker City Fire/Ambulance. He was using safety restraints and was transported by ambulance to St. Alphonsus Medical Center in Baker City.
OSP troopers from the Baker City work site responded to investigate. Torres was cited by OSP for failure to drive within the proper lane. ODOT assisted at the scene.
