A 76-year-old Pendleton woman was killed Thursday in a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 84 near Meacham.

Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are still investigating the crash that killed Barbara May Nash around 1:35 p.m. on Thursday, May 29.

According to OSP Sgt. Sterling Hall, preliminary information indicates Nash was traveling eastbound on I-84 near milepost 238 when, according to a witness, she passed another vehicle using the left lane. According to the witness, her 2004 Chevrolet Blazer drifted to the right onto the shoulder. It continued into the gravel off the pavement, traveling several hundred feet before going up an embankment and onto a guardrail. The vehicle came to rest on its passenger side off the eastbound lanes.

Nash was pronounced dead at the scene.

OSP troopers from the Pendleton and La Grande offices are investigating the cause of the crash. It is unknown if Nash was wearing a seat belt.

OSP was assisted at the scene by Umatilla Tribal Fire Department and ODOT.
