Harley L. (Jack) Fitzhugh, 92, of Echo, died on Monday July 7, 2014 in Hermiston. Jack was born April 25, 1922 to Harley and Vera (Carter) Fitzhugh in Renova, Montana. He grew up in Harrison, Montana graduating from high school in 1940.

He worked for his father driving truck and delivering coal and grain around the county. He joined the US Navy in October 1942 serving just over three years on LST 268 in the South Pacific. He was proud to be a veteran and member of the Greatest Generation.

He married Frances Albro April 25, 1945. They had three daughters, Penny, Patsy and Kelly. Jack had his own trucking company and received a safe driver award when he had three million accident free miles. He and Fran moved to eastern Oregon and lived in Echo 38 years. After retiring he drove school bus which he thoroughly enjoyed. He treated the bus students like grandchildren.

Jack kept in touch with many of his shipmates. He and Fran hosted a Navy reunion in Kennewick, Wash. Fifty two of his shipmates and wives attended. Their loyalty and bond with one another was priceless. Jack and Fran also attended a reunion in Columbia, Mo.

Jack loved his family unconditionally. He always had time to tell a good story or share a joke. He enjoyed woodworking and fishing with family and friends.

He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife Fran of 69 years; daughters, Penny (Ron) Gavette (Pendleton) and Kelly Hale (Stanfield); grandchildren, Brett (Polly) Conner and Erica (Nate) Haak; great-grandchildren, Cameron and Abigail (Abby) Conno;r and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by many honorary grandchildren.

The Fitzhugh home was a haven for many kids.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Bob; and daughter Patsy Rice.

A celebration of life with Military Honors be held on Monday July 14, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Burns Mortuary Chapel in Hermiston. Disposition was by cremation. Memorial donations may be made to Vange John Memorial Hospice 645 W. Orchard Ave. in Hermiston to continue the wonderful care for others.
