Work began on Monday on a section of U.S. Highway 730 in and around Umatilla to upgrade signals and improve sidewalks.
Oregon Department of Transportation officials said the work will continue for the next several weeks. The eastbound traffic signal at Brownelle Road and Interstate 82 is being upgraded with new controllers and video detection to make it more efficient and reliable. About a dozen sidewalk ramps will receive ADA upgrades between River Road and Brownelle Road. Paving activities are expected to begin late-April and will run from Southshore Drive to McNary (mile post 180.54 to 186.0).
The paving operation will skip downtown Umatilla. Travelers can expect lane closures and minor delays for the signal and sidewalk upgrades over the next several weeks.
The signal and sidewalk work is expected to be completed around mid-April. Once the paving work gears up travelers should plan for lane closures, reduced speeds, flaggers, pilot cars, and up to 20-minute delays along the project limits. The $2.5 million project is expected to be completed around mid-June. Traffic fines are double the amount in all work zones Drive with extra caution and please slow down.
