Farm-City Pro Rodeo Begins 4-Day Run Tonight
Things got off to a quiet start at the 2014 Umatilla County Fair. There was the early-morning hustle and bustle of fair volunteers as well as 4-H and FFA members taking part in judging competitions. The carnival had yet to open and the crowds were only beginning to trickle in.
But by afternoon, the pace picked up, the crowds showed up, the temperatures heated up and the fair was officially in high gear.
By the time the grounds filled up with fairgoers, plenty of ribbons had already been won in a variety of 4-H and FFA competitions. And when the Davis Carnival opened up at 2 p.m., the grounds took on the unmistakable look and feel of fair week. Crowds gathered at the Les Schwab stage for Godfrey the Magician and Professor Bamboozle.
By late afternoon, the scent of fair food was wafting through the air and the lines in front of the lemonade stands and snow cone booths were growing longer by the minute. The day wrapped up with a performance by Uncle Kracker, ending Day One of fair week.
If you missed out, don’t worry – things are just getting started. Today’s lineup is much the same as Tuesday’s, but with the Oak Ridge Boys taking to the Wildhorse Main Stage at 9 p.m. The Farm-City Pro Rodeo begins its four-day run today with slack scheduled for 2 p.m., mutton bustin’ at 7:25 p.m. and the rodeo getting started at 7:45 p.m.
4-H and FFA swine conformation got under way early this morning as well as dairy conformation. Also on the schedule is rabbit and poultry showmanship. One young competitor, Emma Martin, 7, of Hermiston, was busy on Tuesday taking care of her buff Orpington chicken named Lola. Emma said she was excited to be taking part in the fair and looking forward to competing during the week.
