An opening reception for Oregon artists Renee Couture and Heather Goodwind will be held on Sept. 24 to re-open the Betty Feves Memorial Gallery on the Blue Mountain Community College Pendleton campus after a summer-long break.

The reception is open to the public and runs from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Gallery.

“Not Simply Here,” features the work of Couture and Goodwind, who depict landscapes, human responses to them and experiences with them, in visually-stunning and thought-provoking ways. As the show title suggests, we don’t simply exist, separate from the landscape; instead we are part of it, reacting with and to it – co-existing.

Couture, from Glide, Ore., explores the connections and relationships people have with their surrounding landscapes. Her technique combines digital collage and drawings to create depictions of a variety of relationships people have with nature. She holds a master of fine arts degree in visual arts and a bachelor of arts degree in studio art.

Goodwind, from Portland, uses paints, ink and graphite to create abstract landscapes that physically embody the emotional experience of a place. Her work has been influenced by her time spent living in New York, Argentina and China. She holds a bachelor of arts degree in sculpture.

The “Not Simply Here” show runs from Sept. 24 through Oct. 22. The Feves Memorial Gallery is open Monday-Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and by appointment by calling (541) 278-5952. The Betty Feves Memorial Gallery is a non-profit exhibit space connecting emerging and established artists and their work with students, staff and the general public in eastern Oregon. The gallery will celebrate its 25th anniversary this winter.
