Firefighters Extinguish Brush Fire

Fire crews put out another brush fire in Hermiston on Thursday.

Umatilla County Fire District No. 1 was dispatched to a brush fire on S.E. Freels Land and S. Townsend Road around 3 p.m.

Upon arrival, crews came across flames on S. Townsend Road working its way toward structures. Crews stopped the flames from spreading and cut down trees that became hazardous to a nearby homeowner. Umatilla Electric Cooperative responded to take care of the power as power poles were on fire.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Thursday’s brush fire was the second in two days in Hermiston. Multiple agencies battled a brush fire on Wednesday on Cooney Lane.

The National Weather Service out of Pendleton issued a Fire Weather Watch for the Lower Columbia Basin on Wednesday that will remain in effect until 11 p.m. on Saturday, July 1. The high temperature for today is forecast to be 100 with a high of 96 expected on Saturday.
