Permits are now on sale for personal-use firewood for the Umatilla National Forest.
The permits cost $5 per cord with a minimum purchase of four cords and a maximum limit of 12 cords per household per year.
Permits are available at area vendors including Smitty’s Ace Hardware in Hermiston and Southgate Mini-Mart in Pendleton. They can also be purchased at a Forest Service office. Permits purchased at vendors will have to pay an additional $2 fee.
Beginning this season firewood cutters will be required to keep a record of the date, time, and quantity of firewood removed from the National Forest System Lands. A chart on the front of the permit called the “Product Quantity Removal Record” is provided to record the information. This new requirement will be enforced. Additional information can be found in the Firewood Guide that accompanies each permit.
Though woodcutting season traditionally opens May 1, soggy, saturated road conditions may make it difficult to access firewood this spring. Mountain travel will require extreme care to avoid getting stuck or causing extensive and illegal resource damage to the land and vegetation. Woodcutters are asked to contact the local Ranger District office before heading out to make sure the area you’re traveling to is accessible.
