Hermiston’s Fourth of July fireworks show ended with a bang – and began with a fire caused by sparks from the fireworks.
Shortly after 10 p.m., just minutes after the fireworks show got under way, the south side of the Hermiston Butte caught fire.
The fire department had burned off the dry grass and brush on the north side of the butte, but not the south side. Crews from the newly-formed Umatilla County Fire District arrived to put out the small brush fires that continued to burn after the fireworks show ended.
