Frederick G. “Fred” McIntyre of Hermiston passed away unexpectedly while sleeping at his home on Aug. 19, 2022 at the age of 72.

He was born in Caldwell, Idaho on Feb. 8, 1950 to Frederick and Evelyn Stumm McIntyre.

Fred moved from Idaho with his family to Condon in 1952. His family next moved to Drain in 1961 and then to Willamina in 1966. He graduated from Willamina High School in the class of 1968. After high school he attended Oregon College of Education, where he completed his bachelor’s degree in education. In 1975, he moved to Umatilla and had lived in the Umatilla and Hermiston areas since.

Fred worked at the Eastern Oregon Mental Hospital in Pendleton from 1976 to 1979. He then worked for Marlette Homes in Hermiston, United Sugar and Lamb Weston for several years. He then began his career at Two Rivers Correctional Institution, where he worked as a correction guard for many years, retiring in 2012.

Fred was an avid sports fan who enjoyed watching basketball, football and baseball events. He also played on many city league sports teams and coached several youth sports, including Babe Ruth baseball. He enjoyed long visits with his brothers, being with family during the holidays, and going on trips with his brother to casinos. Fred loved children but he never married or had children of his own, so his nieces and nephews became his kids. He had a generous heart and was always willing to help his family. He was well known at the Hermiston McDonald’s, where he started his day with his senior cup of coffee, but usually returned for lunch and dinner. He is gonna be missed by many!

He is survived by his brother, Steve (Cindy) McIntyre; nieces and nephews, Andrea (Johnny) Cook, Donnie McIntyre, Steve (Erica) McIntyre and Keith McIntyre; great nieces and nephews, JC Cook, Ethan Cook, Amber Cook, Caleb McIntyre and Cayden McIntyre; as well as many extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Ken and Don McIntyre.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9, 2022 at the Sunset Hills Cemetery in Umatilla.

A reception will follow the service at the Best Western conference room in Hermiston.
