Mother Nature must have got the memo to be on her best behavior on Saturday.
The sizzling summer of 2015 took a break over the weekend, just in time for Funfest in downtown Hermiston. With temperatures in the 80s (instead of the 100s), people of all ages spent the day taking in the sights and sounds of the Hermiston Chamber of Commerce’s annual summer celebration.
The day got started early with the Hermiston Rotary Club breakfast on Second Street. With vendors galore, live music, chainsaw carving, and more, festival fans had plenty to keep them busy. Entertainment was provided by the youngsters of the Hermiston Parks and Recreation Department dancers, as well as the Totally Elite Cheer group and the Round-Up City Cloggers.
Music was provided by Dallin Puzey, the Dakota Brown Band and Jacob Lopper, who saved the day and gave a second (unscheduled) performance when the Fiesta Foods Mariachi Band’s van broke down, preventing them from arriving in Hermiston on time.
Other highlights included the ever-popular George Kenny School of Chainsaw Carving, whose members turned large pieces of wood into decorative carvings in a matter of minutes. Later, the pieces produced during the demonstrations were auctioned off to the highest bidders.
Classic cars were on display at McKenzie Park and the day was capped off with a Neon Nights Glow Run at the Oxford Trail after dark.
