Gary Freeman Hoeft died on March 22, 2023 in Hermiston at the age of 89.
He was born on Sept. 4, 1933 in Pilot Rock.
Gary was raised, married and lived in Pilot Rock until 1984, moving to John Day then to Hermiston in 2004, where he had lived since.
Gary served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from May 1953 until April 1955. He married Sharon Erdman, his faithful wife of 64 years, on Sept. 27, 1958. He loved the outdoors, camping, riding motorcycles and his horse. He was a master lumberman, working in lumber mills in Pilot Rock and John Day.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon Hoeft; children, Peggy (Jeff) and Randy (Tania); grandchildren, Mark, Mary (Ben), Cody (John) and Callie; great-grandchildren, Maddie and Emma; and sisters, Delores, Iris and Sharon.
Gary was preceded in death by his daughter, Patty and his parents, Virgie and Fritz Hoeft.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held on Monday, March 27, 2023 at 10:30 a.m., followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church in Hermiston.
Burial with military honors will be held at 1 p.m. at the Pilot Rock Cemetery.
